Research Focus
Open Design for Resilience is a research project which highlights how actors who are facing diverse crises adapt with ingenuity and resourcefulness. It explores the global maker movement as an attempt to democratize innovation and self-empower individuals to experiment and make use of digital manufacturing methods for own needs.
Through a critical review it evaluates the potential of Open Design, an alternative way of sharing creative discoveries transparently and accessible, while also looking at its limitations and risks of dual use in an uncertain future. Field trips to diverse public makerspaces within Europe and interviews with actors outlined their commitment to resilience of communities, the ability of social actors to cope with and overcome adversities.
Can anyone be a designer?
What does it take to become one? This project explores the response of the global maker movement in developing community resilience during uncertain futures and the polycrisis. It questions the risks and limitations of open technologies, such as 3D printing, in meeting needs that are not addressed by our market-driven economy.
