Cycles of Repair

'Cycles of Repair' is a pedal-powered mobile workshop for community repair events, co-designed with three repair communities from North Italy. It addresses technical and economic barriers to bike maintenance that drive resource waste. Replacing fossil-fueled transport with a modular trailer, it provides repair communities with low-impact, mobile infrastructure.

Problem Space
Volunteering organizations can have a big positive impact on their community and environment. Solidary repair networks can support their users to gain access to affordable mobility solutions. Making autonomous bike repair accessible is one of the driving goals besides the social benefits of community work. But volunteers often operate in precarious conditions: temporary or lacking rental agreements, low income and budgets. How could the future of solidary repair look like and what role could commissioned events play in this context? Download thesis here.
Design Challenge
Co-designing possible futures of solidary bike repair. Developing a low-threshold public service to support sustainable mobility. Users access shared DIY knowledge and special tools to extend bicycle lifespans. Manufacturing techniques draw on available makerspace technologies, using universal aluminum profiles, Euroboxes, and bike components. The adaptable, repairable system fits most bicycles and advances the Right to Repair.
